โProp. 39 is the latest attack on voting rights in California.โ
Assemblymember and Vice Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus Isaac G. Bryan issued a sharp critique of Prop. 39, arguing that the initiative is intended to disenfranchise Californians, particularly Black voters in the state.
The initiative would require voters to present government-issued identification at polling places and direct election officials to verify that registered voters are U.S. citizens. It would also require voters who cast ballots by mail to provide the last four digits of a government-issued ID.
Currently, California requires voters to provide identification information, including a California ID or driverโs license number or the last four digits of a Social Security number, when registering to vote, but does not generally require voters to present identification at polling places.
